The Government Museum of Bangalore is one of the most remarkable tourist attractions of Bangalore. It is located on the Kasturba Gandhi road in close vicinity to the Cubbon Park. The main building of the Government museum was designed by the architect
Colonel Sankey and its construction was done in the year 1876. A number of wings were later added to the main building of the museum and it has been opened up for public viewing in 1886 only.
The Government Museum of Bangalore has two main exhibitions floors which are further divided into 18 galleries like geology, natural history, sculpture, art and numismatics. The main collections of the museum are ancient coins and art, and relics from the Indus valley civilization, especially Mohenjodaro, Halebid and Vijayanagar. Some relics of the museum are 5000 years old.

Other main attractions of the museum are its prehistoric artifacts which belong to Neolithic period. These artifacts had been excavated from Chandravalli. Other items seen in the museum are South Indian jewelry, fascinating stones, inscriptions, icons, paintings, coins, miniature paintings, sculptures, textiles, etc. Government Museum remains closed on Wednesdays and public holidays.
